Meta Conversions API explained for marketers

Browser privacy changes, ad blockers and consent choices mean the Meta Pixel misses a share of real conversions. Fewer conversions reported means Meta has less signal to optimise delivery, and your cost per result rises. The Conversions API (CAPI) is Meta’s answer: send the same events from your server as well as the browser.

What CAPI does that the Pixel cannot

  • Sends events server to server, so they are not blocked by browser extensions or cut short when a page closes.
  • Can send events that never happen in a browser, such as a lead qualified in your CRM or an offline sale.
  • Lets you pass hashed first-party data (email, phone) that improves how well Meta matches events to people.

Deduplication: the step people miss

Most setups run the Pixel and CAPI together. Meta deduplicates the two copies of an event when they share the same event name and event ID. If the event ID is missing or generated differently on each side, conversions are double counted and reporting looks better than reality. Check the Events Manager deduplication view after launch.

Event Match Quality

Events Manager scores each server event for Event Match Quality on a 0 to 10 scale. Higher scores come from sending more matching parameters: hashed email and phone, external ID, the fbp and fbc cookies, IP address and user agent. Only send data you have collected with consent and that your privacy policy covers.

When CAPI pays off, and when it does not

  • Worth it: you spend meaningfully on Meta, optimise for purchases or leads, and see a gap between Meta-reported and actual conversions.
  • Worth it: your real conversion happens offline or in a CRM, days after the click.
  • Can wait: very small budgets or campaigns optimising only for reach or engagement.

Setup routes range from platform integrations (Shopify, WooCommerce) to the Conversions API Gateway or server-side GTM. The right one depends on your stack and how much control you need over the data.
